The students of Visva Bharti in Santiniketan, who have been organizing a sit-in on the rusticity of three peers for more than a week, began a hunger strike on Sunday after placing a bouquet of flowers at the main entrance of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) Residence of Bidyut Chakraborty on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.

The agitators said they placed the bouquet on the portal to wish the VC, but despite their efforts, Chakraborty “did not recognize it”.

Somnath Sow, one of the three rustic students, said the hunger strike would be watched by the students to pressure their demand for an immediate revocation of the deportation order. Rupa Chakraborty, another rustic student, was the first to go on strike during the day.

“Our agitation for the immediate revocation of the deportation order will continue. We will continue this satyagraha, more than 50 meters from the residence of the VC, in accordance with the directive of the High Court. We’re sorry he didn’t accept our floral tribute and refused to meet us in person, ”Sow said.

The three students were suspended in January after participating in a rally on the Visva Bharti campus to protest the alleged “vindictive attitude of the VC towards those who oppose its views.”

An official from the central university said that they had been given the opportunity to present their case to the investigating commissioner appointed by the institute, but that they had not all three been “excused”. The students were expelled for three years on August 23.
