Derbyshire Live spoke to store manager Matthew Slater who said it was a surprise to make the list. The 20-year-old said: “I only found out because we were tagged in an Instagram post. For some rewards you have to enter and then you have to pay to get the certificate but don’t actually enter. something and be recognized because it’s pretty nice.
“It shows that people are actually watching what you do and acknowledging the work you do, so it’s good when it’s like that.”
Matthew added: “We have been on this road for four years and we were on London Road opposite the Old Hospital and we do all occasions, we do weddings, funerals and general gifts. We are a small team but we do a bit of everything.
“My parents owned the shop originally so I always grew up around flowers and was always really involved with it.
“I just fell into it. I remember when I was very little, I used to play with Oasis green floral foam and sculpt shapes in it. When you’re surrounded by something like that, you naturally fall into it. J started helping out for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas and wedding seasons and it was just accidental I guess.”
According to Matthew, during wedding season (spring and summer), the company can expect to provide flowers for two weddings per week. He told Derbyshire Live they had six weddings in seven days over Easter.
Matthew said: “Because so many weddings have been put on hold with Covid, there’s so much pressure for this year.”
Matthew told us what a day in the life of a florist looks like: “It’s long hours. I come here at 6am every day and shop before and after, as it’s the season weddings, we do consultations half-time six o’clock at night so I didn’t get home until 9:20 last night but that’s just work, isn’t it, really?
“In normal retail you can buy something and sell it, but in floristry you have to make something to sell. All the flowers, we have to order them and then package them before we even make a bouquet, so it’s quite complicated. a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into making the final product.”
In addition to providing floristry services, Boutique Florists also offers a wide range of indoor plants and succulents as well as a variety of flower pots.
