My weekend with fake florist Sharon McVeagh from Innocent Chaos

The best time to get up on the weekend is?

h, I love sleeping in on a Saturday if I’m not in the studio meeting brides-to-be and arranging wedding flowers. I’m usually up around 9 a.m. to walk the dog or make a nice cup of tea.

Breakfast or brunch?

I like a good breakfast to prepare me for the day. I can’t function without some runny eggs and a cup of Earl Gray tea.

What do you prefer on weekends and what would you eat?

I like to eat my way through the fridge. Usually I would start with an Earl Gray tea, toasted sourdough, avocado, arugula, sausage and two poached eggs that run on top – it must be runny. With a very busy studio Monday through Friday, on weekends I really enjoy spending time with my husband (I’m still getting used to that word as we just got married in December 2021), family and friends.

What does an ideal Saturday look like?

I’m sure my answer as a 20 year old would be very different, but my 30 year old’s ideal Saturday would be a lazy morning with a bit of a lie in, then into the kitchen to have my avocado toast and eggs , then head to the garden to tackle the messy chores that need to be done.

After that, I would go to a friend’s house for breakfast and then come home to walk Tilly, our dog. At night, I would light the fire, drink a cheeky glass of red, and cook dinner with Gary. We like to cook together, so dancing in the kitchen and making something with lots of garlic and probably chili peppers is involved.

What would your perfect Sunday look like?

On Sundays, I like to do things at a slower pace. We like to have a cup of tea in bed, then take Tilly somewhere for a great walk, then visit the family for a big Sunday roast in front of the fire. There should always be a fire for more comfort. Then it’s a cup of tea on the couch and a good movie. I try to take time on a Sunday to set my intention for the week ahead and rest up for another productive Monday.

Do you prefer to be indoors or outdoors?

On weekends I like to go out and spend time in the garden and take as many walks as possible. I draw a lot of inspiration from nature for my floristry business, so getting out and seeing the changing seasons is very important to me. If we go for a walk we like to go to the beach, Helen’s Bay is a favorite or we also like Lady Dixon Park, Cavehill, The Giant’s Ring or up the north coast somewhere.

How have weekends changed with age?

My weekends have changed a lot since I was 20. I loved going to Club On at McCracken’s on a Saturday night or the Sky/Milk/Beach Club etc.

If you could eat anywhere in NI tonight, where would you go and why?

Probably Coppi. I love their relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. If I can’t get a reservation there then it’s Lottie at Ballyhackamore. The food is so good.

What would you have?

At Coppi I would usually opt for the gnocchi or a pasta dish. All of their food is so good I would eat anything there.

On weekends, you will always have time to…

See your friends and family, be outdoors, and eat everything in sight.

Do you have any weekend working hours?

I work one Saturday a month in our floristry studio to meet brides-to-be and discuss their wedding flowers. With a busy Monday-Friday schedule, I have to limit work to many evenings and weekends because it’s so important to have a good work-life balance — one Saturday a month works fine for me.

Who would you most like to go for a drink with and why?

I would love to go for a drink with my grandmother Iris. He’s the sweetest, kindest, most talkative person I know, so I couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather go out for a drink with.

Are you a weekend cook?

Absolutely! On Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, I start my cooking game. I put something juicy on my iPad to watch, pour a glass of red (usually a merlot) and cook for hours. My husband and I like to choose a theme and run with it. It is usually Italian, Spanish or Mexican. We just got back from our honeymoon in Mexico, so I can’t wait to try some new recipes this weekend. I think fish tacos are on the menu.

What’s your dream Sunday dinner?

My dream Sunday dinner would be at my parents’ house, in front of the wood-burning stove, a glass of red, roast chicken, mashed potatoes, heaps of gravy, heaps of vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and much more. course the very important homemade stuffing. My mother is a fantastic cook.

Who do you usually eat with on Sunday evening and where?

Usually with Gary and our parents in one or other of our homes. As long as there is a good Sunday dinner and a comfortable place, it doesn’t matter where we are.

Too tired to cook – what do you order to take away?

My favorite takeout would have to be Kamakura’s. We usually order our bodyweight sushi and then some sort of noodle dish to follow.

Heading to the cinema? What are you going to see?

I like a good action or crime film at the cinema. I love anything with Denzel Washington in it. The man can’t go wrong on the big screen.

Stay in… what TV/streaming/catch-up programs are on the menu?

Anyone who knows me knows that I watch a bit of everything. I like to watch my iPad when I’m in the studio. It helps me focus for some reason. I particularly like true crime, with its juicy psychological twists.

What are you reading?

I just finished The Things We Left Unsaid by Emma Kennedy. I absolutely loved it. A book about family, love and loss. It was a nice easy read, a perfect choice for reading on the lounge chair on our honeymoon.
