Florist sent back to ‘lockdown’ after car drove into store window

A shop owner said the store was sent back into ‘lockdown’ after a car ‘hammered’ the front window.

Sharon Kirkham was woken by a call from the police around 6am on Sunday that her shop front in Liscard had been destroyed after a car crashed into it.

Rushing to view the damage, Sharon encountered a car outside The Flower Boutique on Wallasey Road in Wirral.

Sharon told ECHO: “I rushed into the store when I got the phone call and they were trying to tow the car through the window and the police closed the road in both directions.

“There was oil all over the road and it took a while to get the car out the window.

“A gentleman who lives above the hairdressers told us that the force of the crash shook the whole block.

“I’m so glad no one was hurt, I’m scared to think what could have happened, especially if it happened back in the day.”

Following the accident, The Flower Boutique was forced to temporarily close its doors to the public, losing around “a third” of its business.

Sharon said: ‘The accident destroyed part of the shop window and the whole store front will have to be replaced. There’s a lot of damage, but it’s replaceable whereas lives are not.”

“About a third of our trade is from the store, we do a little online but we get a lot of walk-in trade. Having your front door closed to the public is like being locked in again.”

The store owner is currently unsure how long she will have to close the florist, which will likely present significant challenges in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.

Sharon added: “It’s just not safe for people to come in because of the glass. Until the insurance comes out and assesses the damage we have to stay closed.

“It could be a week, two weeks, a month – I really don’t know.”

A Merseyside Police spokesman confirmed no one was injured in the incident, but the driver got out of the car and fled the scene.
