Althea Wiles, Florist Educator for J Althea Creative Consulting and Creative Director of Rose of Sharon Floral Design Studio, recently exhibited a floral arrangement for the Spring 2022 Art in Bloom showcase at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Regional floral designers accepted into the lounge are invited to create a custom flower arrangement for the exhibition inspired by the magnificent works of art on display in the museum. The floral designs are then matched and displayed next to the inspirational artwork. Guests have the opportunity to stroll through the galleries to see this spectacle and witness the time of year when the museum “comes alive”.
“’Dress Impression with Wrinkled Cowl’ by Karen LaMonte has been my favorite piece at Crystal Bridges since I first saw it. I was very excited when it was included in this year’s Art In Bloom selection options. Karen LaMonte enhances the human form by sculpting glass garments around an empty form. This inversion of classical sculpture inspired me to design a contained arrangement in which the floral material was enclosed within the vase. I used the Phalaenopsis Orchid. It’s such a striking flower, both delicate in appearance and actually quite sturdy, just like the glass sculpture that inspired me,” says Althea Wiles.
“Althea Wiles has participated in the Art in Bloom exhibition three times: spring 2019, fall 2021 and spring 2022. Each exhibition is unique and based on the particular works of art used as inspiration. For example, last fall 2021, Althea’s floral artwork was inspired by Kim Dickey’s freestanding aluminum, glazed terracotta, silicone and rubber sculpture, “Mille-fleur”, and the arrangement accompanying floral had a completely different feel to this spring’s show. It makes the exhibit interesting time and time again,” says Meredith Corning, public relations officer for Althea Wiles.
